Programs are audience interactive and range from fifteen minutes to one and half hours.

Detailed description

Act Your Age-seniors theatre group, AYA, was established in October 2006 as a response to community positive ageing consultations. Based in southern Tasmania the group comprises of members aged fifty and over with varying degrees of theatrical experience. AYA is a registered unincorporated non profit organisation, affiliated with Tasmanian Regional Arts with all performances provided free through voluntary participation – with reliance on funding opportunities or generous donations.  Inspiration for AYA performance productions are drawn from age related materials, previous audience comments, academic research literature, media portrayal, magazine articles, and life experiences of AYA performers. Prior to developing a particular production theme the group will discuss various positive ageing issues. These are finally transcribed into a formal script which is thoroughly rehearsed before being considered ready for a public performed reading. Six formal production pieces have been developed to May 2009, these are: Life of a HACC Worker, Changing a Light Globe, Banker’s Nemesis, Isolation of Good Intentions, Cost of Ageing, What do you mean? [under production]. In context each production evolving around the “Judy Teapot Reality TV Show” format – with performance modality focused on a theatre-in the-round narrative interactive melodrama. This performance genre provides a creative basis for raising the social, health & wellbeing, and political “voices” of all older persons. AYA is a progressive dynamic seniors theatre group which continually seeks to improve performance skills, create new production themes, respond to audience evaluations/comment, and work collaboratively with similar interest groups & organisations to meet our objectives.

The Active Cognitive Enhancement program:
A gym for the mind in Hobart.

A new and exciting program is about to be run again  in Hobart and other suburban centres, including Kingston Health Centre, designed to  improve mental functioning. Called the Active Cognitive Enhancement (ACE) program, it is being run by Alzheimer’s Australia Tas and the local Community Health Social Worker.

ACE will run for 10 weeks and incorporates a variety of challenging mental exercises, puzzles and games, along with mindfulness meditation to boost participants’ memory and mental fitness and combat cognitive decline. As the program will be evaluated as part of a research project being conducted by the School of Psychology at the University of Tasmania, those who participate must attend all 10 weekly sessions, along with cognitive testing that will occur before and after the program.

The ACE program will be free of charge.

WHEN   Pre-program interviewing and cognitive testing will begin in mid-August. The ACE program will commence in mid-September

WHO FOR  Anyone over the age of 55  who is keen to improve their mental functioning – memory, decision-making, attention/concentration and speed of processing. Participants may also have a family member with cognitive decline and seek to reduce the risk of their own decline.

New retirement development in Kingston

There is an exciting new development for retirement living in Kingston.

Christian Homes Tasmania have, for many years, been an active participant in providing a range of living accommodation and aged care in the Kingborough and Channel areas.

From its earliest beginnings in 1972, our Association has operated as a not-for-profit organisation and has used any financial surplus is used to further its Aged Care work and independent living units.

We are proud to introduce our latest development in independent retirement accommodation, Wellington Views, located at 141A Channel Highway in Kingston. Stage one, consisting of 14 independent living units, is now well underway, with stages two and three to follow.

Our attractive brick homes will be set in delightfully peaceful grounds with a sunny, northerly aspect and wonderful views of Mount Wellington.

The property boasts many convenient features such as its close proximity to shopping and services, quiet and secure lifestyle and a true sense of community within the property itself and the wider neighbourhood of Kingston.

It is often the case that the once highly valued family home becomes unsuitable, demanding high levels of maintenance for a dwelling which is just too big and located in areas too reliant on private transport.

Let Christian Homes Tasmania ease the anxiety of accommodation concerns, and consider the possibilities of life in this quality, new homes village.

After all, life is what you make it.

Further information regarding Christian Homes Tasmania, including the Wellington Views development can be accessed on our website www.christianhomes.org.au  or to express interest in Wellington Views as a place to settle and enjoy, please feel free to contact our helpful management team on 6229 1397 or via the email links or phone numbers found on the “Contact Us” page of our website.

Cheaper fares for seniors around Australia

Seniors around Australia are now able to access concession fares on most interstate public transport systems as a new national scheme begins to rollout.

From 1 January, the new national scheme started rolling out to allow seniors to use their concession cards outside their home state.

The scheme will provide incentives for grey nomads to spend their tourist dollars in Australia and is a boost for communities and businesses that depend on tourism.

When fully operational, over three million Australians who hold seniors cards will benefit.

The Australian Government has offered almost $50 million over four years to State and Territory Governments so that they can provide concessions to Seniors Card holders who are using public transport services outside their home state.

Australian Government funding to states and territories for a national concession transport scheme for seniors.
